History

Business East Inc. has been incorporated since 1998 on the Eastern Shore, encouraging enterprise with the key mission of stimulating employment and economic growth in Tasmania. Over the past 20 years, our not-for-profit enterprise has provided mentoring services, guiding potential and existing operators in their business and employment development. Communication between businesses has been encouraged with regular networking events, business forums and awards, and a quarterly newsletter updating businesses on local relevant business activity.

In 1998 the unemployment rate in Tasmania was above 8% and through a Government Initiative several Enterprise Centers were formed to stimulate economic growth and creation of jobs by providing guidance to people who wished to establish their own business.

Over the past 20 years we have assisted in establishing many businesses that now employ 1-100 people. Some of these clients still support Business East through their membership and at times seek our guidance and refer family and friends.

The prestigious City of Clarence Business Excellence have been held every year since 1999 (except 2020 due to Covid-19). These awards are widely recognized, winning business owners are very proud of the achievement, reflecting the team effort from their staff.

We have also conducted and/or organized numerous workshops, i.e., Business Growth Strategies presenter Brenda Tsiaouris, Market Ready Workshop at Triabunna and Hobart Airport with trainer Sandra Gillanders, Passion and Profits for Business at Sorell, presenter Christine Hepburn, Valuation of Businesses by Warren Moore, Telstra Business Centre re NBN plus many more.

The Annual Business Forum provides an opportunity for members to hear from local business and organization guest speakers such as John Pooley (Pooley Wines), Robert Pennicott (Pennicott Wilderness Tours) and Luke Martin (Tourism Industry Council Tasmania).

In the past 12 months numerous workshops have been presented to the inmates at Tasmania Prison Service on Business Planning, Marketing, Bookkeeping and Getting Started in their own business.
